For the past ten years, I’ve been running my business in “reaction mode.” Emails, ideas, client needs – everything dictated my schedule. While I was profitable, I knew it could be way better.
Here’s what I learned:
1. Plan your path to success with a business plan:
It’s not just about paperwork. It’s about becoming an expert in your business. Understand your unique value proposition and how you stand out from the competition. Research your target audience and their needs. Craft a marketing strategy that attracts the right clients. Having a plan sets clear goals, identifies potential funding opportunities, and gives you a roadmap for growth.
2. Build strong business credit:
This isn’t just about fancy loans. It’s about building financial security and flexibility. Get your EIN and open a dedicated business bank account to separate your personal and business finances. Consider net 30 accounts with reliable vendors to establish a good payment history. This opens doors to better credit card offers, lines of credit, and even lower insurance rates.
3. Time management: master your schedule (and stop working all the time!)
Figure out your realistic availability and ruthlessly protect it. Track your time for a week to see where it goes. Delegate tasks that drain your energy or don’t align with your skills. Create a system for batching similar tasks to improve efficiency. Remember, breaks are productive! Schedule them in and use them to recharge.
4. Set boundaries for a healthier work-life:
This isn’t about working less, it’s about working smarter and creating sustainable habits. Turn off notifications on your phone outside of work hours. Set specific times to check email and stick to them. Communicate your boundaries clearly with clients and colleagues. Create a welcome package that outlines your expectations, communication style, and turnaround times.
5. Be real with your goals: start small, dream big:
Don’t set yourself up for failure with unrealistic expectations. Instead, set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Analyze your current time, service pricing, and target audience to set achievable milestones that lead to bigger dreams. Celebrate small wins along the way to stay motivated.
6. Balance isn’t a balancing act, it’s a slice of life:
Forget the traditional work-life balance scales. Think of it as a pie, where each important aspect gets its deserved slice. It’s not about achieving equal hours in every slice, but about prioritizing what matters and making it work. Delegate, automate, or outsource tasks that drain your time and energy. Invest in self-care and activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul.
